How do you deal with the mail? The first thing I do after getting the mail out of the mailbox is stop at the recycle bin and put all of the junk mail in there. What I do bring into the house gets opened immediately, and then sorted: file/shred/recycle. It used to take up space in various places of the house – things that needed filing would sit on the countertop or stairs waiting to be carried to the filing cabinet in the office; things that needed to be shredded sat in a different pile; things that needed to be mailed sat on the counter. NOT ANYMORE!
We turned a magazine rack from Ikea ($10) into our mail sorter station. I included an "empty" picture as well as a "full" picture. It has three slots, which we labeled mail (to be mailed), file and shred. We put it on a wall directly in front of our back door, so it's convenient, and it's using vertical/wall space to avoid clutter on the counters. I will admit, it gets out of control at times, as you can see. When the slot(s) gets full, we make one filing trip upstairs, or do one big round of shredding. It works for us because it gets things off the counter/stairs, sorted and organized.
