When you’re thinking about organizing your closet, the very first thing to do is to go through your clothes and let go of any clothes you don’t love, that don’t fit, or that are stained or damaged. After you’ve pared your wardrobe down to the clothes you love and wear (and, I’d suggest, feel great in!), you can figure out what kind of storage you really need in your closet.
Take a look at your wardrobe and divide it into categories. You’ll want to look at the clothes that hang and separate the long items, like dresses, from the short items, like blouses and jackets. (Pants could belong in either category, depending on how you like to store them.) Then look at your folded items and assess whether you want to store them in your closet or in storage furniture, like a bureau, outside your closet. See how much space you’re going to need for shoe storage, taking into account possible growth in that category. Don’t forget about items you might like to store in your closet, like jewelry and handbags.
Once you’ve assessed what you want to store, you can use a tool like Rubbermaid’s Closet Designer to figure out what storage solutions will make most sense for you.
