What is the best way to organize and store toys?

Toys can take over every room in the house so finding the right solutions is key to keeping an organized home. Keep in mind that no matter what storage container you use, always, always, label!

Here are a few things to consider:

  1. Group all similar toys together (e.g., all duplos together, all small legos together, all action figures together, all dolls together, etc).
  2. After sorting and deciding which toys will be kept (and which will be pitched or donated), pick the main locations the toys will live (e.g., child’s room, den, family room).
  3. Select a storage unit/container you like that will hold all the toys and fit in your space. Color coded bins with word and/or picture labels can help children (and adults, too!) put things back where they belong.
  4. If you already have shelving (e.g., wall mounted, bookcase) in the room, clear shoe boxes can also work well. Leave the lids off for things you want your children to have easy access to. And, don’t forget to add labels!

You can also use a traditional toy box or even a hinged storage ottoman, but keep in mind that your child will have to dig for what he/she wants and may dump everything out to find that one special item.

    Hi John -

Thanks for your question. I think they should hold up well in a container with acid free paper. You may want to move them to a room in your home where the temperature doesn’t fluctuate greatly. Here’s an article that will offer more information: http://howto.wired.com/wiki/Store_Your_Comics_Properly.

    Good luck!
