Drinking More Water Made Easy

Do you have visions of being healthy and drinking the recommended amount of water per day, but always seem to be chugging water at bed time (and getting up in the middle of the night to use the restroom)?

Good news! My co-worker Gretchen found a great way to motivate yourself to drink more water throughout the day. The solution: know how much water you have to drink per hour.

How do you do this?

  1. Grab a Rubbermaid 30 oz Hydration bottle (Gretchen is sporting the classy purple below)
  2. Get a Sharpie paint pen
  3. Split the bottle into four even sections (using the markings already on the bottle to help)
  4. Mark the sections counting down the hours starting with 9 am (and 2 pm) and ending with noon (and 5 pm). NOTE: Gretchen’s thought process is that she’ll drink another glass of water at lunch, so she skipped noon to 1pm and started again with 2pm.
  5. Drink two of the bottles a day, drinking one section each hour.

Um, you’re not really supposed to drink 2 litres of water a day – that’s an old myth. It’s generally enough to drink when you want to, your body will tell you when it needs fluid. You’re supposed to drink according to your activity level, so you would drink more on a day you were active than on a day when you weren’t. The point of the water is to make it easier for your kidneys to clean your blood, so it’s important to drink water slowly throughout the day as blood is constantly passing through your kidneys.
